Joseph Vitti is a scientist and performer based in San Diego. He is passionate about genetics, musical theatre, and social justice.
I received my bachelor’s in philosophy (2010) and my Ph.D. in evolutionary biology (2019) from Harvard University. For my doctoral research, I developed and applied computational methods for identifying natural selection from genetic diversity datasets (PubMed, Google Scholar). While at Harvard, I also spent five years as a residential and academic advisor for first-year students (Harvard Gazette) and earned a language citation in Japanese.
Following my doctorate I spent four years working in business development for biotech startups, primarily servicing large pharmaceutical clients. For example, I drove the negotiation, planning and implementation of a partnership to extend the utility of Pfizer’s proprietary gene expression data through a scientist-friendly, cloud-hosted research ecosystem (GenomeWeb, Pfizer 2021 Annual Report).
In May 2024 I moved from Boston to San Diego. Currently, I am on hiatus from my biotech career, and am exploring non-traditional career and growth opportunities, primarily in modeling and the performing arts.
I believe strongly that scientists are accountable to society for their research, and that the life sciences are long overdue for a reinvigoration of tried-and-true ethical principles. I argued for this position as a postdoc in an opinion piece on the Broad Institute blog, catalyzing community discussion surrounding a study into the genetics of homosexual behavior (see e.g. NYT). I continue to use my position wherever possible to advocate for ethical rigor in STEM.
